What Not To Do
Do Not Admit Fault

Even if you think you are at fault, do not admit liability. There may be factors which you do not know which played a role in the accident and it may turn out that the other driver was more at fault than you.

Do not make statements to anybody at the accident scene, except for the police. When you speak to the police, tell them only the facts of what happened. Let the officers draw their own conclusion from the facts.

Do Not Sign, or Agree to Anything

It is extremely important that you do not waive any rights that you have. As mentioned above, do not speak to anyone apart from the investigating police officer at the scene. Do not agree to any concessions with the other party, and especially, do not speak with, or agree to anything with any insurance companies. ALSO, NEVER ACCEPT A CHECK FROM AN INSURANCE COMPANY UNTIL YOU HAVE CONSULTED WITH AN ATTORNEY—THAT COULD CAUSE YOU TO LOSE OUT ON MORE MONEY LATER.

Do Not Sign Any Documents without first consulting a qualified attorney, such as those at the Massachusetts Personal Injury Law Center.

Do Not Delay Taking Action

It is important that you act fast after an accident. A Statue of Limitations will limit the amount of time after an accident that you will be able to file a lawsuit and notice requirements require you to contact the respective insurance companies as soon as possible.
